Sweep picking exercises that would enable you in learning the method perfectly in a very short time!

I've made many mistakes with sweep picking exercises, which I shall describe for you. All the guitar tutors tell one thing in common, to play it slow and gradually increase the speed. I have come close to quitting the guitar altogether as this method of practicing has frustrated me over and over.

I always tried to play too fast too soon, and things never went well when that happened. For example in my next run through the scale/pattern, I would be able to play at 30bpm semi-perfectly and move right on up to 40bpm. Firstly I tried to use a perfect technique at 40bpm which is one of the worst things you can do as I didn't have it at 30bpm. It is habit only because your muscles don't forget the way you played a lick/riff and now also they do the same way. Now you are going at a faster level and it remembers your imperfect technique at 30 bpm and now you wish to push the same technique to get something more difficult. John F! This is almost like failing your training from flight-school as I don't know about you and the school which still allows you to fly the next flight from. From Kennedy up to Heathrow.

At this time you should have a particular sweep picking style to perfect. First of all, in case it is too long a pattern, break it. Even if it looks weird practicing just a segment of the pattern at once, trust me this would help you in the future. you are making it easier to commit the piece to your muscle memory. Next you need to select the correct fingers to perform the short section. I understood i cannot have speed and perfection to play a pattern because i have chosen wrong fingers and they fail me often.

Thirdly, once you have the right fingers in place on your short pattern, begin too slowly and play it at that pace till you get it down perfectly. In the event that mistakes are still occurring, revise and reduce the length of the sequence, alter finger arrangements, and keep practicing. Begin again, with the slow speed.

Once you are comfortable with that speed, increase it to 1bpm. Practise it at the same speed for 2 minutes and in case you are fine at that speed shift 1bpm upwards once more. While keeping your muscles, hands, arms, and shoulders relaxed, come in this direction. You could reduce the 2 minutes if you play the pattern fast.Until you have your fully mastered sweep picking pattern, follow this technique with every pattern and then connect them all.
